Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation
The Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation (BJEF) is dedicated to marine education, conservation, and research, to ensure the future of our marine and coastal environments.
To ensure that our unique coastal environment remains a place of discovery and wonder for future generations, Busselton Jetty Inc. directs 3% of annual profits to the Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation’s projects and initiatives. Also, 50c from each booking goes directly to our sustainability fund, supporting projects like solar panel installation and waste reduction programs.
While this helps us towards our goals, we could not achieve all our valuable programs and initiatives without the generous support of donors like you.
Conservation & Protection
At the heart of Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation’s mission is the conservation and protection of Busselton Jetty’s vibrant and complex marine ecosystem. Many of the species are endemic to the South West, and found nowhere else in the world.
Our conservation work includes management and monitoring of the artificial reef formed by the Underwater Sculpture Park and full length of the Jetty itself, daily marine species surveys, marine pile rehabilitation, coastal cleanups, and even seabird rescues.
Education & Awareness
We believe education is key to conservation. Our school programs and community events connect people with the Jetty’s unique marine world, teaching sustainable practices and empowering future generations to protect our oceans.
We are a proud learning destination for Children’s University Western Australia.
Marine Monitoring & Research Partnerships
The Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation partners with academic, government, and industry partners to inform our everyday management decisions, and to support marine science at the Jetty and beyond.
Through our marine monitoring programs and student partnerships, our programs support marine projects exploring everything from reef regeneration, marine temperature shifts, and species abundance.
You can be a scientist too, by contributing observations from your Jetty visit to our citizen science projects like iNaturalist, Redmap, and CoastSnap!
Community Engagement
Community is at the heart of everything we do. We work closely with community groups, schools, and local businesses to promote environmental stewardship, and to foster a sense of shared responsibility for our precious coastlines.
Our curriculum-endorsed Jetty Crew Youth Leadership Program equips students with leadership and environmental skills, empowering them to become marine stewards and future community leaders.
Marine Pharmacology Project
Beneath Busselton Jetty lies a thriving marine ecosystem of over 300 species, including sponges producing unique chemical compounds. The Marine Pharmacology Project, led by the Busselton Jetty Environment Foundation and our partners are exploring whether these compounds could lead to breakthrough treatments for diseases such as liver cancer. This pioneering research combines conservation, science, and community to inspire global health innovation.
Sustainability
From small steps like providing water fountains and encouraging reusable bottles, to our iconic solar-powered Jetty train, we are committed to ongoing improvements for the benefit of our planet.
